Jan. 29, 2012 – Crosscountry Skiing at Mt. Washington. Let’s take advantage of the snow and get out and look for animal tracks.


Feb. 26, 2012 – Biking and Hiking Gabriola Island. We will walk our bikes onto the ferry and then bike to some local trails and parks.

Apr. 1, 2012 – Night Tracking Adult Toads. We will do a night hike around Morrell Lake to locate migrating adult toads heading to the lake to breed.

May 20, 2012 – Camping on Newcastle Island. We will take advantage of the long weekend to have our first overnight camping trip. We will learn about outdoor gear, trip packing and planning, and camping skills. Attendees will be required to attend an additional evening weekday meeting beforehand to plan for the event.

June 17, 2012 – Let’s Boogie on the Beach. Come celebrate summer solstice at the beach. We will rent wetsuits and boogie boards and spend an afternoon playing in the waves near Tofino. attendees must be able to swim.

July 22, 2012 – Shhhhh...We’re Hunting Bullfrogs. Expert Bullfrog collectors will teach us how to catch these invasives. We will donate our stash to the VIU biology department for their education program. We will be going out at night in boats – attendees must be able to swim.

Aug. 19, 2012 – Paddling in Paradise. We will enjoy a few hours of kayaking along near-shore islands at low tide in search of marine life – attendees must be able to swim.

Sept. 16, 2012 – To the Top!  If we have a clear day, we will hike to the top of Mount Benson to enjoy views of the straight to the east and mountains to the west, and perhaps locate a geocache.

Oct. 21, 2012 – Mushroom Hike. We will look for, identify, and learn about local mushrooms.

Nov. 18, 2012 – Hiking at Nanaimo Lakes. We will explore a trail in the Nanaimo Lakes area, looking for geocaches.

Note: The Banff Mountain Film Festival is usually held during the third week of Nov. at the Port Theatre. Outdoor enthusiasts will be awed at the courage (and craziness!) of extreme climbers, skiers, kayakers, mountain bikers, travelers, etc.

Dec. 16, 2012 – Snowshoeing and winter solstice potluck lunch at Mt. Washington.

Jan. 16, 2011 – Snowshoeing at Mt. Washington. Let’s take advantage of the snow and get out and look for animal tracks.

Feb. 20, 2011 – Do Red-legged Frogs Breed in Urban Ponds? We will hike just west of the Linley Valley Park placing a hydrophone into the numerous lakes, wetlands, and ponds in the area to see if we can hear Red-legged Frog males calling underwater. We will also geocache along the way.

Apr. 17, 2011 – A Celebration of Trees. We will hike a local trail and learn how to identify the different tree species, how foresters measure their volume, and age, how they are used by wildlife, and other interesting tidbits.

Oct. 2011 - Amphibian Road Surveys along Nanaimo Lakes Road. During the month of Oct. we will repeat our road surveys to reduce the number of amphibians killed along the road.

Nov. 20, 2011 – Indoor Rock Climbing. We will go to Romper Room for an afternoon of indoor rock climbing. Come and learn, or improve your rock climbing skills.
