January Nature Nugget- Is it True that No Two Snowflakes are the same?

Yes, it’s true!  Just like human fingerprints are each different, every snowflake is different, although each snowflake is made up of thousands of tiny, identically shaped hexagonal (six-sided) crystals gathered together.  There are many reasons that no two snowflakes are alike.  Snowflakes form by sticking to each other while falling and blowing through the wind.

 Leader Bio for Dionne:
I am a mother of two boys and have been an educator for fourteen years. In my family and work life I see the value of connecting young people with nature. When we moved to the beautiful community of Quadra Island it was a natural extension to start a Young Naturalist Club. The club has been a great way to build community, meet other families, learn more about and foster connections with nearby nature.

Upcoming 2014 Explorer Days

Saturday, February 22nd, 2014 - Great Backyard Bird Count!
At Rebecca Spit on Saturday, February 22nd.  Meet at the far parking lot at 1pm.  A local birder will be joining us for the event.  If you have binoculars or bird ID materials you may want to bring them along.

I'll also be talking using iNaturalist, a free app, and how our club can be involved in the Discovery Island Ecosystem Mapping Project.  If you have an Apple device (iPhone, iPad or iPod) you may want to download the app beforehand so you can use it during the event.

South Okanagan

Welcome Young Naturalists of the South Okanagan!

Volunteer Co-leaders: Alyson and Paula
Club email: yncsouthokanagan@gmail.com

Photo: Sandra Boel

Our club meets on the last Sunday of each month with a focus of exploring nature throughout the South Okanagan. This club will be focusing activities for 3-8 year olds, though the whole family is welcome to join us!

We ask that you please register with Alyson and Paula to secure your family’s place for each event.

Please contact us if you are interested in volunteering as a co-leader! We have had so much interest in this club and want more local families to be able to participate.

About Alyson:
Hi everyone! My name is Alyson and I am mom to two young children who love spending their time outdoors.  Outside of YNC, I work as an environmental consultant. Providing opportunities for children and youth to experience nature is incredibly important to me and the reason why I became a volunteer with YNC.  I have always loved getting outside and feel so lucky that my job and my hobby are one in the same.

About Paula:

My name is Paula and I am a mom to a three year old.  Playing and exploring in nature is something we love to do.   We were looking for other young families to join us, and decided what better way than working with Alyson and other parents to organize a local YNC chapter.  My love for nature has lead me to study ecology, fish and wildlife technology, gardening, birding, native plants, astronomy, nature interpretation, and so much more.  We hope others will join us on many wonderful journeys through nature.
