On Saturday, March 29, the Burke Mountain Young Naturalists went to Deer Lake Park.  We saw lots of different kinds of birds (35 different species) and some other animals, (squirrel, person, dog, tree frog, banana slug).  We saw tons of swallows and one nearly bumped into Anthony's head.  It was exciting to see three different kinds of hawk: Harrier, Cooper, and Red-tailed.  In addition, we found a dead yellow-rumped warbler in the bushes.  Our guide, Istvan, said that the bird may have been attacked by a predator, because its wing had bled, or it may have died because of the harsh weather.  We also found a duck skeleton in a hole under a log.

EXPLORER DAY AT DEER LAKE PARK

March 29, 2008

By Samuel, William, Nicholas, and Anthony

Our guide, Istvan, is very nice and is very good at identifying birds, even at a distance.  He had a telescope on a tripod with him and he let us look through it to see the animals better.  Through the telescope we got to see a red-tailed hawk nest with a hawk in it.  We would like to thank Istvan Orosi and Noriko Nakaya for organizing a great outing!
