School Club in the Spotlight

Southlands Elementary- Vancouver, BC

In the spring of 2007 Southlands Elementary ran a 10-week nature club for its students thanks to teachers, parents, volunteers and the YNC. Just goes to show, a nature club can be a regular school activity that spans an entire year or run for a semester or another specific period of time.

Club Stats:  
  Grades: 4-7
Members: varied between 20-40
Meeting time: weekly, Friday at lunch, for 10 weeks
Sponsors: 1 parent, 1 teacher

Types of Activities: guest presenters- Stanley Park Ecology Society’s Coexisting with Urban Coyotes, BCIT students Salmon lifecycle and dissection, Burrowing Owl Recovery Team presentation- wildlife walks in nearby park, birding basics in preparation for the Great Backyard Bird Count, Bottle Drive to raise money for the Burrowing Owl Recovery Team and more.
